Nomadic was commissioned to replace the Network at Fire&Ice Melrose Arch with Xirrus WiFi equipment. The network was slow with intermittent disconnects and suffered the effects of congestion during peak periods. The Network was negatively impacting the GUEST user experience.

Protea Hotel Fire&Ice prides itself on High occupancy, an Urban Trendy environment and recognising that the GUESTS WiFi needs are extremely important and considered a business driver against its competitor.

The average GUEST carries 3 WiFi devices and typically uses 2 or all 3 concurrently. In a situation of a shared GUEST room it is not unusual to have 5 concurrent sessions.

The equipment installed at the Hotel was the Engenius Single Radio Access Point which are not enterprise grade and were unable to cater for high capacity usage – supporting multiple laptops, tablet and phones

The network provided service in the 2.4Ghz range only. At the time of installing the property 5Ghz devices had come to market and the network should have catered for the increased channel capacity of 5 Ghz so as to allow offloading and distribution of clients equally across the network. The network was designed with no future proofing.

Initially Fire&Ice added more lines with a view to increasing the speed of the network and reducing the volume of GUEST complaints being received. The increased lines made no significant difference.

Nomadic has been installing WiFi networks within the Protea group for 10 years and is a WiFi specialist Company. A GUEST expects to be able to make Skype calls and use their iPad/Tablet/Laptop concurrently. Increased use of wireless networks over the past 10 years is significant with most of the increase occurring over the past 24 months.

Nomadic site surveyed Fire&Ice Melrose Arch and determined exactly what needed to be installed and where the Xirrus arrays need to be placed. The product installed was the Xirrus 2420 and Xirrus 520 range of Access Points – each Array housing 4 Access points with the Xirrus 520 to fill any RF gaps.

With the new Network installed, the volume of GUEST complaint calls instantly decreased to less than 4 per month. The call volume is being monitored by the Hotel and Nomadic.

Single Radio operating in the 2.4Ghz band only. This means that all GUESTS are forced to connect to this band and by default causes congestions. Multiple Radios that operates in both 2.4 and 5Ghz bands. This allows the Access Point to direct the different devices to the appropriate radio and intelligently separate the traffic moving it to cleaner air. This increases the speed.
Cannot manage the Network remotely. Each access point is an independent device that cannot be managed as a whole. This means that when a GUEST has connection problems, the fault cannot be indentified and rectified. The network can be managed and monitored remotely. The solution is distributed and therefore each Access point works as part of a Network and be managed.
The physical hardware cannot operate at line speed – it is limited by the components of Access Point (you get what you pay for) High quality hardware and design – specialised product. The Xirrus Access Points (Arrays) can utilise the increased line speed being installed by the Property.
No Capacity - cannot handle the high volume of sessions being driven by GUEST carrying multiple devices. Specialises in handling capacity which is essential for uninterrupted GUEST WiFi use.
